about

Notes from Daniel Romberger about this arrangement:

A Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda game, and it contains many themes that have endured throughout the franchise (Fairy Fountain, Kakariko Village, Zelda's Lullaby, and more). I've been speedrunning the A Link to the Past Randomizer for a little over a year now, including many variations such as entrance rando, keysanity, crosskeys, and criss-cross / door rando. Playing ALttP Rando made me truly appreciate how clever the puzzles are in the vanilla game.

And linking all these puzzles together is this, the theme to the Dark World! In making this arrangement, I wanted to primarily enhance the original track and lean heavily into epic brass fanfares. To facilitate this, there's a slight instrumental change - we moved Isaac Smith to euphonium and brought in Dacian Grada on tuba so euphoniums could have harmony for the "let's go to the Dark World" motif. This arrangement invents some motives of its own, most notably the four staccato quarter notes that first begin in the horns. I did my best to make each theme of the piece as well as each motive have a transformative arc culminating with a loud and powerful climax. That being said, I couldn't resist the temptation to quote the first Zelda theme that the Game Brass ever played, Hyrule Castle!

Also, make sure you stick around to the end of the arrangement for an extra musical surprise.
