about

Limited material can present some of the best arranging opportunities. The theme for Besaid is beautiful, sweeping, and surprisingly short, with only about eight bars of actual melody. How do I turn this into a three to four minute track? This arrangement partially solves that by borrowing heavily from Shiro Hamaguchi’s radical reinterpretation of the piece from the Final Fantasy X Piano Collections, so we end up with a blend of the original in-game track and Hamaguchi’s jauntier 12/8 version.

As one of the more majestic island-related pieces of VGM, pianist PurpleSchala feels like the perfect collaborator. Brass don’t always translate well to fast, flourishing textures, but the piano can handle that perfectly, providing a nice ethereal backdrop to the more bold brass sound, allowing every instrument to play to their strengths and give us the perfect start of our summer pilgrimage.
